House Democrats to drop contraceptive funding from economic-stimulus plan
January 27, 2009
Prompted by President Obama, Democratic leaders in the US House of Representatives have dropped a proposal to fund family-planning programs as part of an economic-stimulus package. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi had argued for the contraceptive funding, explaining that children are a burden on the government. The President reportedly asked lawmakers to drop the provision in order to attract support from opposition Republicans.
